I put Billy in the back seat of my SUV with Zeke, whom I had told to be quiet until we got back to Anneâs. We drove back the way we came, which took quite a while longer when you werenât driving at the speed of sound. Billyâs new pickup truck with the bullet holes and blown out windows was left to sit in the muddy grass of some poor guyâs field. I had taken the shotgun, unloaded it, and threw it in the back of my SUV so no one would find it lying around.
I drove slowly on purpose, allowing all of us to decompress after such an insane few minutes. When my heart rate had returned to normal, I figured it was time to have a conversation. I pulled off onto the very first side road I saw and pulled over onto the grassy shoulder. A few large Oaks provided a feeling of privacy. I turned off the engine and hopped out of the driverâs seat, then walked around my SUV and opened Billâs door. I very politely ripped him out of the car by his shirt and let him fall on to the grass.
I squatted down next to him and spoke quietly, ignoring Zekeâs prying eyes from the car window above me. âOkay numbnuts, Iâm gonnaâ tell you what I know, then youâre gonnaâ tell me what you know. And if you give me any bullshit, some farmerâs gonnaâ find your body out here one day next week.â I pulled the Glock out of my belt and held it in my hand so he could see it. âSo youâve been a busy boy, havenât you? Itâs not enough that the gas company next door is polluting the water, you actually had to poison the cows with some kind of insecticide?â
He looked up at me and was probably going to say something stupid like âI didnât do it,â except I chambered a round in the Glock.
âSo tell me asshole. Why would you want to kill Anneâs cows? And now youâre gonnaâ kill Hankâs cows? You the worldâs first cow serial killer? Is that it? You hate cows? Hell, man, if you hate cows, just do what I do and eat every steak you see.â
He looked at the ground.
âSo you poisoned Anneâs cows with that Diazo-shit something or other, and now youâre at Hanks doing the same thing. And before you deny it, remember that I have the shit in that jug, which is going to match the tissue samples from the cows. So. Think real hard, and then tell me the truth so I donât have to blow your fuckin head off.â
He looked up at meâmaybe he was thinking of telling me he didnât believe Iâd do it or something. Thatâs when I pressed the barrel into his forehead so hard it made a barrel imprint and gave him my pissed off face, which wasnât even an act, because I was pretty pissed.
âHey, man, relax.
